Our Story

The series springs from the deep-rooted vision of Chief Gibby Jacob (Squamish), an exceptional leader who dedicated over three decades of his life to standing up for his people. A critical player in numerous local, national, and international dialogues. Chief Jacob, bore witness to the generational disruptions caused by the residential school system and the profound loss of an ancient lineage. He, and many of his contemporaries feared that today's youth, the leaders of tomorrow, would lose touch with their rich cultural heritage. Recognizing the urgency of preserving and passing on the irreplaceable wisdom of the elders, Chief Jacob and many prominent Indigenous leaders committed to link the past, present, and future together—to draw their people "back to the fire," their sacred learning place.

Enter award-winning filmmaker, Andy Keen, who, while on a separate mission to educate himself on the historical injustices and learn directly from survivors, fell under Chief Jacob's tutelage. The alliance formed between Chief Jacob and Keen transcended professional boundaries, becoming a cross-cultural collaboration that symbolizes an act of reconciliation on a small scale.
Enter Pieter Romer (Nisga’a), award-winning senior producer of CTV's First Story, with over 100 hours of TV broadcast.
Enter  Geena Jackson (Sechelt), creator and producer of Bears’ Lair, 2024 RBC Ones To Watch Recipient.

With an advisory board of notable thought leaders including Chief Robert Joseph (Gwawaenuk), Deanie Kolybabi (Inuit), Sophie Pierre (Ktunaxa), Kathryn Teneese (Ktunaxa), and Phil Fontaine (Anishinabe), this Indigenous-led team have helped to shape the show from the ground up.
